Fed: Beattie sure thing for QLD election: newspoll

A poll shows Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE will triumph over the Coalition in the
state's election next year, despite ending the year in damage control.

The Newspoll -- published in The Australian newspaper today -- shows the Labor government's
standing at 46 per cent hasn't diminished despite scandals involving foster-care child
abuse and ministerial motor vehicle rorts.

The Liberal and National parties have failed to make significant gains, recording 22
per cent and 13 per cent respectively.

One Nation has also posted an unremarkable result, with PAULINE HANSON's release from
jail appearing not to have buoyed support.

At three per cent, the party's result remains well behind the 8.7 per cent it recorded
at the last Queensland election in 2001.

The poll also shows up to 64 per cent of voters favoured Mr BEATTIE as premier, compared
to 15 per cent for National Party leader LAWRENCE SPRINGBORG.
