Profile America -- Wednesday, December 6th. Major additions toAmerica's spectacular National Park System occurred this month in thepast, at opposite ends of the country. On this day in 1947, theEverglades National Park was established preserving part of the vastmarshland of the Southern Florida peninsula. And in 1980, eight areasin Alaska were designated national parks, including the DenaliNational Park and Preserve, where Mount McKinley is located. Thereare almost 50 million acres in the National Park System. In addition,there are national monuments, parkways and recreation areas.Together, they draw 277 million visitors annually approaching thetotal population of the country.
